Installing a sweepstakes app without taking unnecessary risks

Store listings, web apps and sideloading — what each means for your phone's security.

Key takeaways

  • Prefer an official store listing or the operator's own web app.
  • Sideloaded packages from a link bypass store review entirely.
  • Check what a listing asks for in permissions before you accept it.

Getting a platform onto your phone should be the easy part. It is also where some of the most avoidable risks sit, because an installed app has access to your device, and a fake one can be made to look very convincing.

The three ways in

  • Official store listings, such as the App Store or Google Play, where apps go through the store's review.
  • Web apps: the platform's own site running in your browser, which you can add to your home screen. Nothing is installed.
  • Sideloaded packages, such as an APK file downloaded from a link and installed outside any store.

Prefer a store listing or the web version

Where a platform has an official store listing, use it, and check that the developer name matches the platform. Where it does not, its web version gives you access without installing anything. The Download page lists the access options for each device.

If you are asked to sideload

Sideloading means installing a file that no store has reviewed. On Android it requires allowing installs from unknown sources, which switches off a protection your phone has for good reason. If a platform only offers a downloadable file:

  • Take the link from the platform's official website — never from a message, a social post or someone who contacted you.
  • Switch the unknown-sources setting back off once the install is done.
  • Be wary of any "VIP" or "modded" version that promises extra features or better results.

Check the permissions

Before you accept, read what the app asks to access. A sweepstakes app has little reason to need your contacts, messages or call logs. A permission that does not fit the app's purpose is a reason to stop.

How to spot an imitation

  • A developer or publisher name that does not match the platform.
  • Few downloads or reviews, or reviews that all read alike.
  • Pressure to install quickly, or promises that sound too good to be true.
  • A download link that arrived in a message instead of coming from the official site.
  • Requests to switch off security features beyond what the install itself needs.

After installing

  • Sign in only through the app or the official site, never through a link in a text or email.
  • Keep the app and your phone's software updated from official sources.
  • Remove apps you no longer use.

If you are unsure whether an app is genuine, message us on Messenger before you sign in — see Contact & Support.

If you installed something suspicious

  1. Uninstall it.
  2. Change the password of any account you used in it, from the platform's official site.
  3. Check your payment accounts for activity you do not recognize.
  4. Message us on Messenger so our team can help secure your game account.

No app, version or setting can improve your results. Anything that claims otherwise is a warning sign.
